Why “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”?

The term “Black Friday” originally had a bit of a negative connotation, with its earliest reference being to workers playing hooky the day after Thanksgiving in the 1950s. It was also used by US police to describe the chaotic traffic on this major shopping day. However, merchants later spun it positively, suggesting that the sales on this day put their finances “back in the black.”

Fast forward to 2005, and “Cyber Monday” was born. Recognizing a surge in online shopping the Monday after Thanksgiving, the term was coined to capture this digital shopping trend. And while there were other name contenders, “Cyber Monday” had that techy ring to it. By 2014, it became the biggest online shopping day in the US and Canada.
