Orientation Day at George Brown College (GBC), Toronto

Today was my first day at George Brown College (GBC), and I have to say, it was quite an experience! The campus day started with me arriving at one of GBC’s three campuses, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. As I approached the entrance, I was immediately greeted by a lively atmosphere. There were welcome booths set up, and the first thing I noticed was the sense of community that GBC fosters. The reception area was buzzing with activity, with college staff and student life volunteers ready to help new students like me navigate the day.

Welcome Booth and Gift Package

As I entered, I was handed a welcome gift package that included a bright blue GBC t-shirt—a small token, but it felt like a nice gesture to kick off my journey here. The student life volunteers were friendly and enthusiastic, which helped calm some of my initial jitters. I could already tell that GBC is big on making students feel at home.

The day officially began with an introductory talk that was both informative and reassuring.

We were given a brief overview of the college, tips on how to prepare for our studies, and insights into the various supports available to us, including mental health and career services. Although some of this information was available in the student handbook and online orientation, hearing it in person made it feel more real.

After the general introduction, we broke out into smaller groups based on our specific programs. This was my favorite part of the day. We played a quick Q&A game and some ice-breaking activities that really helped us get to know each other. It was also my first chance to meet some of the faculty members and learn more about what to expect in the coming semester. The program session wrapped up with a tour of our classrooms and common labs, which made me feel a bit more prepared for the first day of classes.

Campus Tour and Student Life

After the program session, there was an optional tour of the campus. I decided to join in, and I’m glad I did. The tour was a great way to get my bearings, and it was led by some of the student life volunteers who shared helpful tips about navigating the campus. There were also several public booths set up by different student groups, including the Student Association, the Careers Group, and even a Black People Network support booth. It was comforting to see that GBC has a strong support system in place for all its students.

One of the highlights of the day was the entertainment provided by student-led dancing and a lively disco. It was a fun break from all the information we were absorbing, and it gave us a chance to relax and socialize.

Memorable Moments and Observations

There were a few moments from the day that really stood out to me. First, the food—free BBQ lunch, pizza, and drinks—was a big hit, though I have to admit the popcorn was a bit too salty! I also tried to get a picture with Helder Husky, GBC’s mascot, but unfortunately, I missed the chance. It seems Helder has a knack for disappearing quickly, like a legendary figure who only shows up when least expected.

Reflecting on the day, I couldn’t help but compare it to my experience back in my home country, where university orientation was a week-long event filled with team games, social activities, and a chance to really bond with other students. GBC’s orientation was more structured and academic, but it was still a warm welcome into this new chapter of my life.

One thing that really impressed me was the emphasis on student support here at GBC. From mental health services to career counseling and diverse student networks, it’s clear that the college takes student well-being seriously. It’s a stark contrast to my past experience where such services were less prominent.

As someone who tends to be introverted, I found the large, diverse crowd a bit overwhelming at times, especially considering the age gap among students. But despite these nerves, I’m feeling optimistic. I’m excited to see what this journey at GBC has in store for me, and I’m hopeful that it will add another memorable chapter to my life in Canada.

Here’s to a successful semester ahead—cheers!
